When Carey started writing songs, she was living in Manhattan with four other students and worked as a waitress to pay the bills. She finally managed to record her demo tape but was unsuccessful in releasing it to record labels. Shortly after recording the demo, Mariah met pop singer Brenda Starr.
When Brenda and Mariah became friends, she was very interested in helping Mariah succeed in the industry. Brenda proposed Mariah’s demo tape to the head of Columbia Records and he hired Mariah as he listened to her tape.
When she was in Harborfields, she became friends with Gavin Christopher and Ben Margulies, and soon they brgan writing songs. Even after her graduation, while living in New York City, Mariah, Gavin, and Ben continued to work together to create a full demo.
Mariah released her debut album “Mariah Carey” on June 12, 1990. Columbia reportedly spent $1 million promoting the album. Sales were initially slow, but eventually, the album went 9x platinum in the US alone and sold over 15 million copies around the world. The album topped the Billboard charts and she won Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
In 1991, Mariah released her second album, “Emotions”, which was also a big hit. Her third album in 1993, “Music Box”, took her career to stratospheric heights. Music Box eventually sold a staggering 28 million copies all over the world after spending 128 weeks on the Billboard charts.
Her success was not short-lived. Her next album, “Merry Christmas”, was also a big hit, selling over 15 million copies worldwide. Her next three albums are set to sell 20 million, 10 million, and 8 million copies respectively.
Mariah’s Christmas album is likely most extraordinary because it includes the song “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, which would eventually go on to become one of the best-selling and most profitable singles of all time, selling 16 million worldwide and the number is still going on. The song has become a massive holiday hit on streaming services like Spotify and Pandora, and has also been featured in dozens of Christmas movies. The song, which reportedly took just 15 minutes to create, brought in around $600,000 a year in royalties for Mariah and producer Walter Afanasieff. The song has earned over $60 million in gross royalties to date.
In April 2001, Mariah left Columbia Records and signed a deal with Virgin Music for five albums for $100 million. That equates to $150 million adjusted for inflation. It was the biggest deal in music history at the time.
Mariah’s first album with Virgin, “Glitter”, was released on August 18, 2001, that was a soundtrack to a movie of the same name that is semi-autobiographical about a fictionalised version of Mariah. Both the album and the film, which was unfortunately released on September 21, 2001, 10 days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, were panned by critics and viewers alike. After Virgin dumped her, Mariah signed a $24 million contract with Island Records for five albums. Her Island albums sold relatively well and her biggest hit was 2005’s “The Emancipation of Mimi”, which sold 10 million copies all over the world.
In 2012, she earned $18 million for an appearance on one season of American Idol. She also released an album under Def Jam and later signed to Epic Records in 2015, where she remains to date. The same year, she signed a $30 million contract for a two-year stay at Caesars Las Vegas Palace.
